Before lockdown, my writing group was making plans for a write-a-thon fundraiser to help pay for our friend Dylan’s top surgery. Both the fundraiser and the surgery were set to take place in early April, but then both ended up being postponed thanks to the apocalypse. Well, the surgery has now been rescheduled for July so the write-a-thon is back on!
The original plan was for all of us to get together at someone’s house and write continuously for 12 hours. We have had to amend that plan due to concerns about social distancing, but now it may end up being even more fun – we’re doing a livestream!
That’s right – you can watch the whole 12 hours of writing goodness with your own eyes! (If, for some reason, that’s something you would want to do. Twelve hours is a long time!) We’ll be streaming on Twitch on Saturday 27th June from 9am to 9pm (BST). We will add in some fun games and challenges to make it a bit more entertaining for anyone who does tune in.
This cause is close to our hearts because getting this surgery will make Dylan’s life so much easier in so many ways. Below is an explanation in his own words:
“Hello all! My name is Dylan Ridler, I’m 23 and identify as ftm (female-to-male) transgender. I struggled with my identity for a long time, but I was able to come to terms with it, and come out, a few years ago. In terms of my transition, I have been on hormones for just over a year, and absolutely loving all the changes that have come with that. That being said, my chest is still a massive cause of problems for me. The dysphoria my chest causes me can often lead me to high levels of anxiety and depression, only made harder by the fact that I now pass as male, therefore there is a pressure I feel to bind whenever I am not at home.
My original plan was to get top surgery covered by the NHS, but I recently found out that the wait list has gone up to four years, and I’ve already been waiting two. I don’t think I’d survive waiting another two years, if I’m honest. This surgery is going to have to be paid out of pocket so any donations anyone could make would be really appreciated. Thank you so much for any and all support!”
If you’re thinking, “This sounds great! How do I give you all my money??” please read the details below:
If you would like to sponsor the write-a-thon you can donate directly to his GoFundMe page. If you can, please let me know your name and pledge amount so we can see exactly how much came from the write-a-thon! You can Tweet or DM me @StarJarBlog.
Alternatively, if you’re someone that I know and you would prefer to donate via PayPal (as GoFundMe takes a percentage of the donations), please feel free to get in touch and ask for my details.
If you’re not able to donate right now, it would still be a massive help if you could share his GoFundMe page around, so please do!
