Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for Drea Damara’s novel The Weeping Books of Blinney Lane! This modern fairy tale is part magical realism, part high fantasy – a combination that is right up my street. Plus, it’s full of books! What’s not to love?
Welcome to Blinney Lane, a historical Salem shopping district controlled by a witch’s curse.
Sarah Allister just wants a normal life running her bookstore and daydreaming about the handsome deliveryman. Contentment seems within reach, even if she has to deal with the daily phenomena that occur in her shop.
But when her spirited nephew shows up to spend the summer, all bets are off. Now Sarah must keep Ricky from discovering the curse of Blinney Lane and awakening its full power.
Will Ricky heed Sarah’s warnings? Or will he accidentally awaken the magical weeping books and send Sarah back to a land she swore to forget?
Get ready for a modern fairy tale that will sweep you away to lands beyond your imagination.
The description of this book had me instantly drawn in. Witches? Salem? Old bookshops? Magical books? That is 100% me. I was so excited to be given a slot on this blog tour! This book was a lot of fun to read and I’m very grateful to Shalini at Digital Reads Blog Tours for giving me the chance to read it for free.
Blinney Lane is full of all sorts of different characters, each with their own quirks and personalities. Sarah Allister is a sort of bookish-everywoman – anyone who has ever preferred the comfort of a book to their own reality can relate to her, especially women and girls. That kind of makes her the perfect heroine in a story about books! All the different characters of Blinney Lane come together to create a fascinating, vibrant, and mysterious community of cursed shopkeepers, excitable tourists, and local regulars.
Quite a lot of time passed between when I read the blurb for this book and when I actually read the book, so I had forgotten all about the fact that it has MAGICAL BOOKS with whole worlds inside them! When I reached that part in the novel I was like, “Oh snap, this book has just reached a whole other level of awesome.” Growing up, Inkheart was always my favourite book – largely because it was a book about books, and book-related magic. The Weeping Books of Blinney Lane definitely tapped into some of that Inkheart-nostalgia and instantly won me over.
I love modern-day Salem (I grew up in Massachusetts and have many fond memories of visiting there) and I love medieval fantasy, so the two contrasting settings of this book are like a dream come true. Although we don’t see much of Salem outside of Blinney Lane, the magic and history of that old colonial town are definitely present, and add to the weight of the story that unfolds. The fantasy world of Farwin Wood is artfully constructed and populated with a marvellous cast of characters just as Blinney Lane is.
I really enjoyed reading this book; it’s a really fun adventure and I can’t wait to check out the next books in the series!
